The Perfect Pearls for Upcoming Senior Girls

July 5, 2011

It’s time for senior pictures for the class of 2012! Hard to believe!

Almost every girl has that special senior picture that starts being taken the summer before their senior year. This picture is sent off to family and friends across the country, included in graduation announcements, hung up at graduation parties, placed on the mantle for years to come and most memorably in the senior section of the year book forever.

If you were to ask anyone what most senior pictures of young women have in common they would say one thing: pearls. Pearls are seen in nearly every formal senior picture in the year book. I counted in my own year book from high school, and nearly 75% of the girls were wearing pearl neckalces in their pictures. That’s a lot!

There’s no better time to become part of this classic tradition. The Pearl Girls believe in providing affordable and quality jewelry to women and girls of every age. We have classic strands of pearls in different colors, sizes, and lengths to fit your particular style and taste. Senior pictures are being taken now, so give your daughter, niece, friend, granddaughter, or yourself a gift that will last a lifetime and contribute to the senior picture tradition! Let yourself be able to look back at your senior picture one day and know you looked your very best in The Pearl Girls pearls!

Explaining Pearl Necklace Lengths

June 19, 2011

When it comes to pearls, have you ever heard of the collar, choker, princess, matinee or opera?  These are various terms to describe the length of pearl necklaces. They are a fun way to incorporate pearl styles with a little but of history.

Starting back in the Victorian era, the collar was very popular. Just like it sounds, the collar is a multiple strand necklace which sits in the middle of the neck. Depending upon the woman’ neck size, this necklace will be around 12 – 13 inches long. It is easy to picture women in portraits with their boatneck or off the shoulder necklines paired with a pearl collar.

A more modern look is the choker, a 14 – 16 inch necklace which sits above the collarbone. It is a versatile piece which, in today’s times, is a favorite of more petit women.

A classic is always a classic and the Princess length, 17-19 inch necklaces, are the go-to length for most women. The Pearl Girls Classic Necklace, at 18 inches, is a princess length. It looks just a good with high or low necklines or a simple crewneck. It is The Pearl Girls most popular length.

Some women just need a little more length which is why the Matinee length is growing in popularity. Historically it has been the choice for semi-formal attire but these days women love pairing this length with business suits. At 20-24 inches, it falls at the top of the bustline.

The opera length necklace, at 24 – 36 inches used to be the essential length for formal attire but, given its versatility, women will wear this necklace in a variety of settings. It is meant to fall just above the midsection but it can be either doubled or tripled for a look similar to a choker or collar. The flappers of the 1920s loved to knot these necklaces or just wear them long. It is also a great choice for women who prefer a double strand look. The doubled version looks great with crew or high necks.

How do you make a fake pearl?

June 13, 2011

Although The Pearl Girls only deal with genuine, cultured pearls (of course),  there are many imitation pearls on the market, and their production is fascinating. One of the most popular imitation pearl originated on a Mediterranean island of Spain called Majorca. These Majorca pearls are shaped glass beads covered in a substance called essence d’orient. This solution is made primarily of crystalline guanine which is extracted from fish scales. Pearly paints, nail polish and shampoo also have this fish scale extract. When the thin, crystalline structure of guanine interacts with light it gives the appearance similar to a pearl.

Manufacturers take the glass beads and dip them into the solution then dry, clean and polish them. They may repeat this process up to 30 times and after the last time they coat the bead with a lacquer. And the Majorca pearl is made!

Other imitation pearls have similar processes. They originate with a glass or plastic bead and it is coated in a substance that resembles the look of a pearl. Manufacturers will create imitation pearls in all shapes and sizes in their attempt to imitate the real thing!

Why Our Pearls Are Knotted So Tightly!!

June 7, 2011

We have had many wonderful comments on our Classic Pearl Necklace. Thank you! The pearls are so lovely with a high luster and clean surface quality… we love them too! One of the questions our customers ask is.. Why are they knotted so tight? It is a great question! Our pearls (along with any other high quality pearls) are knotted on silk and that silk stretches! In fact, one of the ways to maintain the high quality and long life of your pearls is to have them routinely reknotted. Well, we want to delay that for you. By offering tightly knotted pearls we are ensuring that the silk will take much longer to stretch. What it means in the short term, though, is that your pearls will take a wear or two before they have a uniform drape to them. If you don’t care about the tight knots and prefer for your necklace to stretch, you have a few options. First run your fingers along your necklace and give a slight tug to each pearl. If that doesn’t stretch them enough, simply dampen the silk strand and pull on each pearl to stretch the silk or hang the necklace to dry and gravity will stretch that silk for you.

As always, we appreciate your feedback! Keep those questions and comments coming!
